Fedora 11 Officially Released June 9, 2009

Fedora 11 was officially released on the mirrors, June 9th. Couple of notes of interest. The files are dated a week ago, June 2nd, the date it was supposed to be released last Tuesday. DVD's are in short supply on the mirrors and the full CD set is 6 cds now. My first pass at Fedora 11 has not been favorable. Off the Fedora 11 LiveCD (Gnome) Install, seems like a lot was broken. Updates didn't work until I went in and edited both the fedora and fedora-updates repo source files. Read More... Updates were pain with repositories, I had to do multiple tries to get all the files to update the system, 62 updates on Wednesday, June 10th but I expected that. The LiveCD is a pretty minimal install, not even OpenOffice core gets installed; plan to spend some time adding your favorite applications. I have been attempting to complete my install of OpenOffice for two days now, but yum keeps running out of repositories to install impress. Yesterday, it wouldn't even find the proper repositories, today (06/11) it does but it still can't download and install, two days post release. Hope the folks at Fedora have not been taking notes from Microsoft in understating system requirements but the recommended minimum system is a PII 400 MHz and 256 RAM, I intend to try this over the weekend. Here are some links: Release Notes - Includes system requirements. http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f11/en-US/ Fedora 11 Guide http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php?title=Fedora11 Fedora Feature List http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/11/FeatureList Download Mirror List http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist Final note of interest: The LiveCD is labeled i686 which is basically a Pentium 4 or equivalent required while the downloadable install CD's are i386 (keeping in mind that you still need a Pentium 2 or better). I was looking at my openSuSE install DVD and it says i586 so it does give one occasion to wonder. The LiveCD does provide for a desktop installation of Fedora 11 and you can download a KDE version as well as the gnome default.
